After completing an undergraduate and master's degree in Illinois, Jonathan spent the first 10 years of his career working as a special education teacher and for a not-for-profit organization. Something Had to Change Upon reaching his 30s and unhappy with the financial and lifestyle trajectory his career path would provide, Jonathan began investing in real estate with almost no money to his name. Using creative strategies and a fierce work ethic, he began flipping houses on nights, weekends, and school breaks. As Jonathan began to see success with house flipping, he also built a portfolio of small multifamily properties. Now enjoying the financial benefits of house flipping combined with the lifestyle benefits of passive rental income, Jonathan was able to quit teaching to pursue real estate on a full-time basis. Leveling Up While flipping houses became more competitive, deal-intensive, and labor-challenged, combined with small multi-family becoming increasingly management-intensive, Jonathan decided to pivot his focus to larger, non-residential commercial properties. Because Jonathan’s value-add approach built so much equity with his smaller properties, he was able to transition many of his small assets into larger, more passive commercial properties. Investing for Lifestyle Having a strategy largely focused on NNN industrial properties, Jonathan is now able to spend less time actively working on real estate while making the same or even more money than before. The management and capital expense requirements of industrial properties are often extremely minimal, allowing Jonathan to design his lifestyle in a way that brings him the most amount of joy and satisfaction. The Podcast Because he’s not spending so much time managing a portfolio, Jonathan can spend time on other professional pursuits. Jonathan is the founder and host of The Source of Commercial Real Estate Podcast, the industry’s only weekly interview-based podcast focused solely on non-residential commercial real estate. With over 100 episodes published, The Source is an industry leader in showcasing high-performing commercial real estate professionals. Beyond Real Estate Jonathan enjoys spending time in his mountain home with his wife and two daughters when he's not working on growing his real estate portfolio. The family enjoys hiking, swimming, biking, and rock climbing. Jonathan also enjoys ultra-running in the mountains, skiing, and traveling.
